Goldberg Variations in pictures

On Friday 18 September, we returned to Southwark Cathedral to perform to a live audience for the first time since March. It was a welcome occasion for musicians, staff and audiences alike. Take a look at these performances in pictures captured by Nick Rutter for Apple and Biscuit Recordings.

CLS string trio at Southwark Cathedral

Alexandra Wood (Leader), Ruth Gibson (Sub-Principal Viola) and Joely Koos (Co-Principal Cello) – pictured above – performed Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s string trio arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, ‘enrobing Southwark Cathedral in pure sonorous velvet’ (said James Murphy on Twitter).

Audience members sat in socially distanced seating in the Nave and were able to move about the Cathedral, following a one-way system, while taking in the music and architecture. Other safety measures put in place included face masks, sanitiser stations and paperless tickets and programme notes.

It was wonderful to be back at Southwark Cathedral, one of our favourite venues, and we look forward to more concerts there in the coming weeks.

Those that couldn’t make it to Southwark Cathedral for Goldberg Variations will be able to watch the performance on our YouTube and Facebook channels from Wednesday 30 September, 8pm, for up to 30 days. Find out more on our website and follow us on either platforms for further announcements.
