Cathedrals Tour: The Fruit of Silence

Posted on: July 30, 2019 in: Programmes>2019-20 Season>2019 Cathedrals Tour, Comment & Media

In October 2019, we’re travelling to cathedrals up and down the country, from Truro in South West England to Bradford in West Yorkshire, for nine performances of The Fruit of Silence – a programme we first performed at Southwark Cathedral on 9 November 2017 as part of our Modern Mystics series.

The music

Presented in partnership with Friends of Cathedral Music, our Cathedrals Tour will celebrate both the architecture and musical heritage of UK cathedrals with performances of meditative and enveloping music by City of London Sinfonia and the cathedral choirs.

CLS strings will perform chamber music by present-day composers including Arvo Pärt (Fratres, Summa), Peteris Vasks (The Fruit of Silence) and Dobrinka Tabakova (Organum Light), and each choir will perform music unique to their cathedral—music that has resounded in our cathedrals across centuries.

Both ensembles will come together to perform Centuries of Meditations by Dobrinka Tabakova, one of eleven pieces of British orchestral music from the past 25 years being celebrated as part of the PRS Foundation’s Resonate programme.

The experience

In our cathedral performances, we want our audiences to have ‘seriously informal’ and immersive musical experiences, whether sitting on a cushion up close, wandering around and exploring the acoustics and architecture, or in traditional seating.

Watch our latest video on Facebook or YouTube, filmed and edited by Apple and Biscuit Recordings, showing what our Absolute Bird audience experienced at Southwark Cathedral in May 2019.
